Simulation of Wet Film Evolution and the Euclidean Steiner Problem

چکیده

The Steiner problem asks for the shortest network that spans a given set of fixed points in the Euclidean plane. The problem is NP hard. The result of simulation of an idealized “wet” film connecting fixed points is a length-minimizing curve. Increasing the exterior pressure step by step we are able to achieve the film configuration near to the Steiner minimal tree. “Dead-point” situations may occur for some symmetric allocation of fixed points. The limited simulation experiments show that the average computation time depends almost linearly on the number of fixed points for the situations without “dead-points”.

Investigation of Dead-Point Situations in the Simulation of Wet Film Evolution

The result of simulation of an idealized thin wet film connecting fixed points in the Euclidean plane is a length-minimizing curve. Gradually increasing the exterior pressure we are able to achieve the film configuration near to the Steiner minimal tree. This film evolution may be an interesting tool for solving the Euclidean Steiner problem, but several dead-point situations may occur for a ce...

Assessment of the Log-Euclidean Metric Performance in Diffusion Tensor Image Segmentation

Introduction: Appropriate definition of the distance measure between diffusion tensors has a deep impact on Diffusion Tensor Image (DTI) segmentation results. The geodesic metric is the best distance measure since it yields high-quality segmentation results. However, the important problem with the geodesic metric is a high computational cost of the algorithms based on it. The main goal of this ...

The Evolution of Urban Zoning from Conventional to Form Based Codes; Introducing Non-Euclidean Zoning Techniqueschniques

Zoning has always been one of the basic tools of land use control available. Zoning is the regulation and restriction of land uses according to a predetermined plan. This paper will present a look at conventional zoning, its origins, the evolution of the zoning, and the scope of zoning types. Regardless of the varieties, most zoning codes can be classified into at least one of the following bro...

A New Algorithm for the Euclidean k-Bottleneck Steiner Problem

We consider the problem of adding a fixed number of relays to a WSN in order to minimise the length of the longest transmission edge. Since routing subnetworks are often trees we model the problem as a Euclidean k-bottleneck Steiner tree problem (k-BSTP). We then propose a new iterative approximation algorithm for the k-BSTP, based on an exact solution to the 1-BSTP, and compare our heuristic (...

A Dynamic Adaptive Relaxation Scheme Applied to the Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree Problem

The Steiner problem is an NP-hard optimization problem which consists of finding the minimal-length tree connecting a set of N points in the Euclidean plane. Exact methods of resolution currently available are exponential in N , making exact minimal trees accessible for only small size problems (up to N ≈ 100). An acceptable suboptimal solution is provided by the minimum spanning tree (MST) whi...
